Built Big to Pull Heavy: Rugged USA Imports' Gen-Y Silverado 2500
Some shop trucks are built to sit on a show stand. Gen-Y Hitch's 2025 Silverado 2500 does stop traffic, it gets photographed at every servo, and the signwriting down the side tells you exactly whose hitch is hanging off the back - but nothing on it is there just to be looked at. It exists to answer the question every heavy-duty truck owner eventually asks: what does this thing look like when it's built properly, from the tyres up, to tow?
The starting point is about as good as Australia gets. GMSV's 2025-update Silverado 2500 HD runs the 6.6-litre Duramax turbo-diesel V8, making 350kW and 1322Nm through a 10-speed automatic, with a 4500kg braked towing rating straight from the factory. Rugged didn't touch any of that. Every part bolted on is about what goes underneath the truck, in front of it, and behind it.
Starting at the Ground
The first thing anyone notices is the rubber: 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawlers, beadlocked to KMC Grenade Crawl machined wheels. Tyres that size don't fit under a stock HD truck, which is where the McGaughy's 7–9 Inch Premium Lift Kit comes in.
This isn't a spacer-and-blocks job. McGaughy's has been building American truck suspension for more than 40 years, and the kit reworks the front end properly: new spindles, new front and rear crossmembers, torsion bar drops, a differential drop, compression struts, lower A-frame support rods, a skid plate, and McGaughy's own front and rear shocks, all made in the USA and finished in gloss black powder coat with stainless inserts. The point is to correct the suspension and steering geometry at the new height, so the truck sits level instead of nose-down and still steers like a truck rather than a ladder. Gen-Y also ordered McGaughy's optional billet face plates 'cause at this ride height the whole front end is on display, so it may as well look the part.
Good to know: the kit's 7-inch base setting goes to 9 inches with McGaughy's torsion keys, upper control arms and rear leaf spring shims (sold separately). Trucks with the factory heavy-duty camper-package springs need longer U-bolts, and the kit doesn't suit trucks running factory Multimatic DSSV dampers. Talk to the team before you order and we'll check your truck.
The Business End
This is the Gen-Y truck, so the rear of it matters most. Hanging out of the receiver is a Gen-Y Hitch BOSS Torsion-Flex Hitch, rated to 7000kg with a 900kg ball weight rating.
Two things make it the right hitch for a truck like this. The first is height. A nine-inch lift on 42s puts the receiver a long way above most trailer couplings, and a fixed tongue would leave the drawbar pointing at the ground. The BOSS comes in 5, 7.5 and 10-inch drop options, with each hole moving the ball roughly 64mm, so the trailer can be set to tow level no matter how tall the truck sits.
The second is ride. Instead of a solid steel connection, the BOSS uses heavy-duty rubber torsion cords between its top and bottom sections, so it flexes and absorbs shock rather than passing every pothole straight between truck and trailer. Gen-Y's figures put it at around 10% of the trailer's inertia coming through, compared with 100% through a rigid hitch. On a lifted truck with a big trailer behind it, that's the difference between the rig settling over rough bitumen and the rig pitching over it.
The 7000kg rating comfortably exceeds what the Silverado is legally rated to tow here. That's deliberate headroom, not a licence: your real limit is always the lowest-rated part of the setup, and on this truck that's the factory 4500kg.
An Infinite Rule stainless locking hitch pin, rated to 7000kg and made in the USA, keeps the hitch where it belongs, and a Gen-Y GHM-030 Serrated Hitch Step solves the problem every owner of a truck this tall runs into: getting up to the tray. It's rated to 226kg, has a serrated no-slip face, slots into any Gen-Y hitch, and is designed to work as a step while the trailer is still hooked up.
To keep things level once the weight goes on, Gen-Y fitted a LOGIQ AirIQ rear airbag system with its own on-board compressor and tank. It auto-levels, and height and pressure can be adjusted on the move from an app, with presets for different loads and road conditions.
There's also something tucked out of sight behind the hitch. A 42-inch spare was never going to fit in the factory spare-wheel well, so that space now holds a Trail'd 52-litre Boondocker Water Tank, plumbed with an electric pump for water on tap without eating into tray space.
Up Front
The bar is a Rugged Bullbar for the 2020–2025 Silverado 2500, designed and made in Australia for Australian touring conditions. It weighs about 80kg before lights and winch, carries a 5mm steel bash plate and two recovery points, has a removable top hoop, and stays compatible with the truck's factory tech pack sensors. It's rated for a winch up to 20,000lb, and this one runs exactly that: a Carbon Tank 20,000lb winch hidden behind the bar.
The bar also carries the mount for a GME 1200mm Heavy Duty Radome Antenna — Australian-made, 6.6dBi gain for range on open roads, a black fibreglass radome on a heavy-duty spring base, and an interchangeable whip so you can swap to a shorter, lower-gain whip for hills and timber country.
Lighting: Enough to Light Up the MCG
Rugged is a KC HiLiTES house, and this truck wears the brand everywhere.
Across the face of the bar sits a row of four KC Gravity Titan 6" LED lights. Each Titan runs KC's 3-source LED optics for short, mid and long-range coverage in one housing, plus a switchable amber dust light so other drivers can see you in dust, rain or a convoy. Patented pass-through front cooling keeps them running cool, and KC's MoistureBlock plug is built into the housing to keep water out of the connection.
A pair of KC Flex Era 4 pods straddle the number plate, and another pair sits up on the A-pillars as ditch lights. The Flex Era 4 throws up to 591 metres in spot and 324 metres in combo, and the lenses are interchangeable, so you change the beam pattern rather than buying a different light. KC Flex Era 3 pods are tucked into the outer wings of the bar for wide fill lighting, and more Flex Era 3s in the rear bar handle reversing — which matters when you're backing a trailer into a dark campsite. A pair of KC Flex Era 1 pods, and KC rock and glow lights underneath round out the lighting.
All of it, along with every other electrical accessory on the truck, runs through a Switch-Pros RCR-FORCE® 12 — a 12-circuit controller that replaces a dash full of toggle switches and relay wiring with one control point inside the cab.
Inside
On 42-inch tyres, the mud comes in on your boots whether you like it or not. A set of GMSV Genuine Bedrock Floor Liners catches it. They're genuine GMSV fitment, engineered and made in Australia, easy to hose out, and backed by a lifetime warranty.
Big, But Not Just for Show
Strip back the height and the lights and this truck is a simple idea done properly. Gen-Y Hitch Australia left GMSV's Duramax driveline exactly as it came, then built everything around it to make the most of it: a suspension kit that corrects the geometry instead of just adding height, a hitch that sets the trailer level and soaks up the hits, airbags to carry the load, and lighting and comms for when the trip runs past dark.
