Why do GVM upgrades use 4 inch McGaughy's and BDS kits?

The 4 inch McGaughy's and BDS kits are the suspension we use most for GVM work. They add the spring rate to support the new rating, give tyre clearance, and still ride like a daily driver. On some late-model HD trucks BDS does not make a 4 inch kit — we spec the closest matching BDS 5 inch system instead.

What else is involved besides the lift kit?

The kit is the hardware. A legal GVM upgrade also needs load-rated tyres, brakes and chassis checked against the new rating, then an engineer's certificate and a modification plate. We scope that before we order parts so you are not surprised at inspection.

RAM 1500 GVM upgrades

RAM 1500 — DS Classic and DT — comes in as a light truck. Canopy, rack and touring gear eat the factory GVM immediately. The usual upgrade is NB1, up to 4,500 kg, so payload comes back and a car licence still covers the vehicle.

The main kit is BDS 4": FOX 2.5 Performance Elite coil-over for DT 2019–2024, the Limited air-ride kit, and the 2025–2026 HO air-ride kit. McGaughy's does not make a 4" RAM 1500 GVM kit — their 4" RAM range is the 2500/3500. Older DS Classic years can still be quoted from the VIN.

NB1 vs NB2 on RAM 1500

Stay NB1 unless you have a reason not to. NB2 on a 1500 costs you Light Rigid and heavy-vehicle rules on a chassis that is happier under 4,500 kg. Heavy slide-on or expedition bodies belong on a RAM 2500.
